Huh? TaoTao TBR7 dual-sport motorcycle has a 250cc engine? I see this often in motorcycle forums, and it confuses me. The TaoTao TBR7 has always had a 229cc engine, from my research, and experience as an owner.
The TaoTao TBR7 motorcycle has never had a 250cc engine size and was then downgraded to 229cc, from what I can tell.
According to TaoTao Motors (TaoTao’s TBR7 product website), the motorcycle has a displacement of 229cc’s.
Based on my research, the engine was never 250cc’s and then downsized to 229cc’s, but was initially a 125cc engine(cg125 Honda Engine, like many Chonda‘s) which was over-bored to 229cc final engine size. This information was pieced together from several sources and couldn’t be confirmed; please comment if this is incorrect.
When I looked at the cg125 engine, it does look like my current TBR7 motorcycle’s engine.
So….. I want more power and TBR7 top speed; however, against my wishes, the TBR7 is not currently a 250cc sized engine.
Thank you.

TBR7 Upgrades
Hi I’m Tom, A New Motorcycle Rider and Blog Author.
I am a new motorcycle rider(Pa Motorcycle Learner’s Permit at the end of 2020, and I received a full M-Class Pa Motorcycle License in 2021, only after passing the Pa Motorcycle Safety Course).
I bought my first motorcycle, a TaoTao TBR7 (A Chinese Dual-sport motorcycle), at the beginning of 2021 and have been doing upgrades on that motorcycle since.
I added to my motorcycle collection by buying a Boom Vader Gen 2 motorcycle in 2022, and that little Grom-Clone bike has been upgraded by me as well.
I continue to ride my Boom Vader Gen 2 motorcycle as well as my TaoTao TBR7 dual-sport bike.

Fun Fact: I’ve only been on one group ride.
Manufactures tend to round up displacement figures.
Yes, that is noticeable.
The number after the name of the motorcycle is only ‘suggestive’ of the actual engine size. Like the CB500R is less than 500cc’s, HUSQVARNA Svartpilen 701’s engine is < 701, and of course our TaoTao TBR7 250 motorcycle really has a 229cc engine. The weird thing about the Hawk 250 and the TBR7 250 seller sites, they sometimes list the motorcycles as having a 250cc engine. Not true; we both know. Hmm...
