TBR7’s New MSD Spark Plug Boots Arrived!

These MSD spark plug boots will be the last stop for the planned ignition system upgrade for my TaoTao TBR7 motorcycle. I had read that resistors in line with the ignition system put undue stress on the capacitor discharge ignition (CDI) system and take away energy from the actual spark for fuel ignition.

My Planned TBR7 Ignition System Upgrade

  1. The plan is to change the stock ignition coil over to a Nibbi Coil.
  2. Change spark plug boot from the resistive stock spark plug boot to the new MSD spark plug boot, Non-Resister.

The idea is to get more spark into the combustion chamber for more aggressive power extraction. I might be able to say I get more horsepower out of my TBR7 motorcycle, but we know the truth. 😉

Going Forward With Ignition Upgrade Plans.

I will put aside some time and try the new Nibbi ignition coil installation first with a test and trial with the stock spark plug boot. Some motorcycle owners might want to keep the stock spark plug boot, like RPS Hawk 250 EFI owners; therefore, my initial upgrade will hold off using these MSD boots.

Afterward, I will then change over to MSD spark plug boots. This way, I only do one upgrade at a time to my TaoTao TBR7. So I can give an honest review of each upgrade on complexity and return on time and money.

FYI: Wikipedia has a good write up about the Capacitor discharge ignition system.

TBR7 Upgrades

P.S. I might consider upgrading the TBR7’s CDI to one of those ‘racing’ motorcycle CDI‘s I’ve seen on YouTube. Too many of the videos were a pro-CDI upgrade, but many didn’t give actual results of upgrading your Bike’s CDI in test results.

I plan on giving an honest opinion, and if you’ve been a reader for a while, you know I post my failures here. I hope to be a big help to those who like to tinker with their Chonda. I’ll keep you informed.

Post Upgrade, I finally got around to changing out the stock TBR7 spark plug boot for the new MSD spark plug boot: TaoTao TBR7 Spark Plug Boot Replacement.

Just Me…Newly Licensed.

Hi I’m Tom, A New Motorcycle Rider and Blog Author.

I am a new rider(Pa Learners Permit at the end of 2020, and I received a Pa Motorcycle License in 2021 after passing a Motorcycle Safety Course).

I bought my first motorcycle, a TaoTao TBR7, at the beginning of 2021 and have been doing upgrades on that motorcycle since.

I added to my motorcycle collection by buying a Boom Vader Gen 2 in 2022, and that Grom-Clone motorcycle has been upgraded by me as well.

I continue to ride my Boom Vader Gen 2 motorcycle as well as my TaoTao TBR7 dual-sport bike.

Fun Fact: I’ve only been on one group ride.
